Resort

Tree skiing

Serre Chevalier offers masses of skiing stretching along a high Alpine valley connecting with the Écrins national park. It boasts 250 km of north facing pistes from 1,200m to 2,800m in altitude. The terrain offers tree lined skiing, great off piste opportunities and a brand new snowpark and boardercross. Serre Chevalier is an excellent choice for a group ski holiday with mixed abilities. It provides an easy route down to the valley from each lift yet offers a playground that will test the most advanced skier and snowboarder.

Serre Chevalier's ski area is totally connected - the 4th largest in France. It is also one of the most southerly, claiming over 300 days of sunshine a year. Serre Chevalier is still relatively snow sure due to its north facing slopes high above the tree line and extensive snow making on the lower slopes.
Serre Chevalier is considered one of the most snowboard friendly resorts in France. The snowpark at Villeneuve has three tables and three boxes. The half-pipe at L'Aravet in Villeneuve is open during the French holidays until 9pm, Tuesday to Friday. Night skiing is included on the Serre Chevalier Pass. The Chantermerle are has a snowcross course with seven bends.

Beginners – Beginners will be very happy exploring the fantastic network of green and blue runs, such as the amazing green run called Route de Frejus, that winds through the trees from the mid-station back into Villeneuve village.

Intermediates – Intermediates are more than catered for, with 56 blue runs and 48 black runs, we challenge you to ski them all in a week!

Experts - Monêtier is usually the least crowded and is the best end of the circuit for experienced skiers and snowboarders. The tree skiing here is world-class, plus its off-piste bowls at the top of the resort, 2,830m, hold the snow well and afford huge descents dropping all the way down to the valley. Be aware that the link with Villeneuve can sometimes suddenly close in bad weather and you may be forced to take the bus home.
To name drop a few more runs, Isolée is an exciting black, which starts on the ridge from L'Eychauda at 2659m and plunges down towards Echaillon. Tabuc is a long black run through the woods with a couple of steep and narrow pitches.

Town Centre

Great apres-ski

Serre Chevalier is not a single resort, but the collective name for a dozen linked villages stretching along a south-facing valley from the Col du Lauteret to Briancon, very close to the Italian border. There are four main towns where the accommodation and main access to the ski area is centred.

Briancon is a charming fortified town, announced as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2008. This old walled town has some great restaurants! Chantemerle and Villeneuve are both purpose built, with Villeneuve being the largest and busiest of the villages with the best nightlife and a good central starting point to access the whole ski area. Monetier is the highest of the villages, an upspoilt spa village since Victorian times, head here during the day for the best snow and afterwards for the thermal spa!

Nightlife
Each town has at least one lively bar – in general the nightlife is quiet – but go to the right place and you'll not be disappointed. In Villeneuve the La Grotte bar (previously known as the Yeti) has live music most nights, there is a rooftop terrace so head here for some sunny après-ski with acoustic sets. The LB bar in Villeneuve has a good chilled atmosphere, until you've had one too many of their lethal cocktails, popular with season workers. The old town of Briancon is worth a visit for a change in atmosphere as are the thermal spas in Monetier.

Other Things To Do
Quad ice-driving, snowmobiling, ice-climbing, spa centre with indoor/outdoor thermal pools, fitness centre

History
Opened in 1941, the Chantemerle ’téléphérique’ or cable car was Serre Chevalier’s first ski lift and was the longest ski lift in Europe. By the 1950s the resort was really starting to take off. The name Serre Chevalier was finally adopted in 1968 and, with the inclusion of Mônetier les Bains, in 1984 the resort of Grand Serre Chevalier was born. In 1990 it was joined by the completely new Briançon ski area, and today the resort as a whole is known as Serre Chevalier. Briancon was the location of France's first ski school in 1902.

Food description

The food is served buffet style each day. Breakfast is yogurts, cereals, fruit juice, coffee and bread - don't be surprised to see that the coffee, tea or hot chocolate is taken French style - a soup bowl!
Typically lunch is a DIY picnic made up at breakfast time (great choice of breads, meats, cheeses, pasta, salad, fruit, sweets etc). The picnic lunch means maximum time on the mountains without spending a fortune on expensive mountain side restaurants. Note that beginners will often return to the centre for a hot lunch. In Serre Chevalier lunch is often a bar-b-q on the deck when the sun is shining (frequent in this sunny valley).
Dinner is a 4 course buffet - typically a salad bar style starter, choice of 3 or 4 main courses - most often including fish, cheese selection, fruit, dessert and ice-cream freezer. Any special dietary Buffet style mealsrequirements should be made known to reception staff at check-in. Generally vegetarians will find a wide enough choice within the buffet.

Entertainment

The UCPA staff lay on an entertainment program each week. It's certainly not Butlins and there is no pressure to take part - all quite low key. Typical program would include stretching in the early evening, crepe making, quiz, sketch evening, karaoke and most weeks at Serre Chevalier a live band.
Equally in the town there is a good selection of bars and nightclubs to suit all tastes.

History

UCPA is more than 40 years old, and was originally set-up by the French government to encourage young people to enjoy the outdoors. It is now a "not for profit" organisation with all profits being put back into refurbishing the centres. The ethos of sport is still first on the agenda, but the instructors and centre staff don't forget that it is still your holiday.Ski-in/ski-out at Serre Chevalier

Top Tips

Arva Park. Test your ability to use an avalanche transceiver before going off piste, at the dedicated Arva Park at Monetiers.

Visit the thermal spa at Monêtier-Les-Bains. Completely renovated during summer 2008, the naturally heated mineral-rich springs in Monêtier are a great place to relax after a few days on the hill. Monêtier-Les-Bains is a picturesque spa village in Serre Chevalier which has been a resort since Victorian times.

Take a packed lunch. There is so much to do on the slopes, we suggest you take a packed lunch, so you don't waste any time.

Casse du Boeuf. End the day on a high on this steep and exciting black run following a ridge through the trees back to Villeneuve. A world class downhill run!

Bad Vis? Head for the trees at Monêtier - this ancient forest has trees of perfect width to ski or snowboard when the visibility is bad - the trees help figure out what's up and what's down in a white out!
