Snowpark in Val d'IsereVal d'Isere is part of one of the world's largest ski areas and France’s largest ski area known as, 'Espace Killy.' It is also linked to Tignes. It offers over 300km of marked pistes and easily-reached yet outstanding off piste skiing. There is so much skiing and snowboarding here it is unbelievable!

The Espace Killy has two glaciers. One is in Val d'Isere, accessed at Le Fornet, and the other is in Tignes. It is important to note that piste grading is higher in Val d'Isere than other resorts e.g., a blue run should be treated as a red.

La Daille terrain park has a half-pipe, two snowcross courses and a host of obstacles. You will find riders and twin-tippers also congregating on the Grande Motte above Tignes.

Beginners - Despite its reputation for steep blacks, there are two beginner areas in the resort, one in the centre of Val and the other at the quieter La Daille.

Intermediates - Solaise is the setting for a new and formidable women's downhill course that was built for the 2009 Alpine Skiing World Championships. From the top of the Manchet chair, the long red Mattis run brings you down to the hamlet of Le Laisanant

Experts - The off piste in Val d'Isere is vast. Freeriders will find lots of natural gullies and cliffs to power down. For a steep powder classic, try the Face du Charvet, accessed from the Grand Pré chair. Or, try Danaides, reached from the Solaise Express chair, which brings you steeply down through the forest above the town.

Summary
Val d'Isere gets the full "4 Pint" rating for nightlife. It's one of the best resorts in the Alps for après-ski and has a reputation for chic-ness - watch out the Russians are coming! The town itself is compact so everywhere is an easy walk. The village is actually quite old, and retains a lot of original charm.

History
Tourism was first introduced to Val d'Isere in the 1900's with a fairly slow start until a good road was finally built in the 1930's. The first ski lift was opened in 1940, with many more added during the 60's & 70's. The town part hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics which financed a substantial face lift of the village. Investment on lifts has remained high and the village has remained one of Europe’s top resorts.

Nightlife
• UCPA Bar – It has as a great vibe, the best prices & super social company however I'm sure you'll want to explore the others...
• Moris Pub – Located just across the road from UCPA, it has a superb après-ski atmosphere with live bands and an exuberant crowd.
• Petit Danois is a Danish staffed bar with a wild party reputation.
• Le Pacific attracts more of a saisonnaire crowd, and is a good place to watch live sport.
• Dick's Tea Bar - Love it or loathe it, it is a seeming permanent fixture in Val d'Isere. It is the only real nightclub in Val d'Isere so you can party on into the wee small hours, albeit at a price.
• Lots, lots more bars in town to suit all tastes - plan your après-ski carefully around the various happy hours !

Other Things To Do
Swimming pool, ice rink

UCPA Val d'Isere

UCPA Val d'IsereIntroduction

Click here for a Virtual Tour of UCPA Val d'Isere 360 View. Val d'Isere UCPA is located three minutes walk from the lively Val d'Isere town centre, this traditional wood / stone chalet sleeps 250 in rooms of 3 to 8 people. Within the building is the dining room, bar, ski / board hire room, large ski storage rooms, and even a nightclub in the basement which rivals clubs in the resort centre for popularity.

Room Details

UCPA Multi-Share
All multi-share rooms have their own sink, with separate shower and toilet, shared with one other room.

Food description

The food is served buffet style each day. Breakfast is yogurts, cereals, fruit juice, coffee and bread - don't be surprised to see that the coffee, tea or hot chocolate is taken French style - a soup bowl!
Typically lunch is a DIY picnic made up at breakfast time (great choice of breads, meats, cheeses, pasta, salad, fruit, sweets etc). The picnic lunch means maximum time on the mountains without spending a fortune on expensive mountain side restaurants. Note that beginners will often return to the centre for a hot lunch. In Serre Chevalier lunch is often a bar-b-q on the deck when the sun is shining (frequent in this sunny valley).
Dinner is a 4 course buffet - typically a salad bar style starter, choice of 3 or 4 main courses - most often including fish, cheese selection, fruit, dessert and ice-cream freezer. Any special dietary requirements should be made known to reception staff at check-in. Generally vegetarians will find a wide enough choice within the buffet.

Entertainment

The UCPA staff lay on an entertainment program each week. It's certainly not Butlins and there is no pressure to take part - all quite low key. Typical program would include stretching in the early evening, crepe making, quiz, sketch evening and karaoke.
Equally in Val d'Isere town centre, a few minutes walk, there is a massive selection of bars and nightclubs to suit all tastes.

History

UCPA is more than 40 years old, and was originally set-up by the French government to encourage young people to enjoy the outdoors. It is now a "not for profit" organisation with all profits being put back into refurbishing the centres. The ethos of sport is still first on the agenda, but the instructors and centre staff don't forget that it is still your holiday.

Useful facts

There is a car park for UCPA guests only, small charge. Located opposite.
Free entry into swimming pool in Val d'Isere with UCPA liftpass NB no board shorts allowed - only trunks!
Go into town along the footpath by turning right out of the front door, rather than left along the main road.

Location

3 minute walk from the town centre, on the main road towards Le Fornet, go past the Morris Pub (on left) and UCPA Val d'Isere is approx 100m along on the right.
